War Tech Fighters Steam Game Developer Interview With Drakkar Dev

We recently came across a game titled War Tech Fighters that was launched on 25th July, 2018 on Steam platform and got in touch with the developer of this interesting game. Here is our interview with the developer of War Tech Fighters game where they talk about this game along with some interesting aspects of game development:

1. Tell us a bit about your game and what was it that inspired you to make this game?

War Tech Fighters is a game about giant robots fighting in space. It takes inspiration from japanese robots anime (Gundam, Evangelion, Macross, etc.) and Hollywood blockbusters (Pacific Rim, Transformers…) as well.

Since we are fond of sci-fi and giant robots, we wanted to make a game that included all the cool things about giant robots in one game.

2. Naming a game is almost always one of the most difficult tasks since that’s what people identify it with. Was this name the first choice for the name? If not then what were some other options you were looking at?

We were searching for a name for our robots that wasn’t just “mecha”. We thought of WAR and TECHNOLOGY…a Techology built for War…War Tech! From there to War Tech Fighters it was a small step. When we realized it’s achronim is WTF…well…it was too funny not to use it! It’s a funny way to remember the game’s name.

3. What sort of thought process went behind the artwork of this game?

Since we are a team of 2 (1 programmer, 1 artist) , we were searching for a pipeline that could maximize the assets production while mantaining a high visual quality.
It took us about three months to figure out a semi-procedural method to build our robots, ships and space stations without having to model, uv-unwrap and texture every single bit of mesh.
It was a hard and long work to do but it allowed us to have more than 180 robot components, dozen of spaceships and stations in the game with the work of just 2 people.

4. What was the major challenge in developing this game?

Mission planning. We didn’t want the game to be a continuos shoot-everything-that-moves. I would have been boring. We wanted the missions to have as much variety as possible.
We added a bit of exploration, the ability to connect to terminals and hacking data, finding clues, engaging close combat with melee weapons, shielding from dangerous star radiation and so on.
The core gameplay is still a frantic and fast shooter but it has a lot of variations to play with.

5. Any in-game secrets that could be easter eggs for players to discover?

– Some of the major characters portraits are actually inspired by famous actors do you guess who?
– There are many references to sci-fi movies in the game’s dialogs (Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and so on)

6. Why do you consider Steam as a platform for your game and is there any other platform you look forward to get your game onto?

War Tech Fighters is our first game thought to be a PC game, for PC gamers. Steam was an obvious choice. We do have plans for consoles porting.

7. How much time did it take to get this game developed and what can players expect in updates for this game?

The game took 2 years of development. The last year was of Early Access (EA) on Steam. During the EA period we’ve released 24 updates…3 of them were major ones.
War Tech Fighters exited EA on the 25th of July and in the first week we released 3 more small updates.
We’re very keen to keep the game up-to-date and getting it better and better, both graphically and feature-wise.

8. What are your future plans as a game developer?

Our goal is to develop better and better games as we grow as developers.

9. How long have you been developing games and what is the most enjoyable aspect of game development according to you?

Drakkar Dev makes games since 2010. We use advanced technology, we play a lot, we create things and stories from scratch…does exist a better job?
