Depraved Steam Game Developer Interview With Evil Bite

We recently came across a game titled Depraved that was launched on 20th July, 2018 on Steam platform and got in touch with the developer of this interesting game. Here is our interview with the developer of Depraved game where they talk about this game along with some interesting aspects of game development:

1. Tell us a bit about your game and what was it that inspired you to make this game?

Depraved is a city builder game with survival aspects, settled in the Wild West. Your task is to build towns and supply your residents with food and other raw materials they need for living. You will have to face several challenges, as fighting against dangerous animals, resisting the seasons or protecting your city against bandits. Depraved directly takes you to the Wild West, living the tough live of a pioneer.

Our childhood inspired us to make Depraved. We’re twin brothers and we’ve grown up playing city-building games and we loved it. We spent hours with playing Settler, Anno and other building games. So it was clear which genre we would choose for our first big title. All we needed was a period which hasn’t been used too often before and that was fun for us to work on. That was when the idea of Depraved was born.

2. Naming a game is almost always one of the most difficult tasks since that’s what people identify it with. Was this name the first choice for the name? If not then what were some other options you were looking at?

Finding a name for a game is always difficult. We thought about it for a long time and we have tried so many names. The working title for this game was Deadwood, named after the TV series. In the end, however, we agreed on Depraved, as the name is short and describes the Wild West best – there were no laws in this period and life was really tough.

3. What sort of thought process went behind the artwork of this game?

Since we are only two people working on Depraved (as we can’t afford a huge artwork team) we had to choose a graphic style that does not exceed our resources. We are often asked why the houses and the surrounding area are beautifully detailed, but are also not graphically up to date. The answer is simple: we don’t have time to work on a 3D model for a month, like the big ones in the industry.

4. What was the major challenge in developing this game?

There are many challenges with such a title like Depraved, but the biggest one is the AI. The AI of the residents is very complex, because each of them takes on a lot of tasks.

5. Any in-game secrets that could be easter eggs for players to discover?

Unfortunately, there is only one easter egg in the game – and it has not been found yet. We also don’t plan to add another one, as we want to focus on the core of the game at this point.

6. Why do you consider Steam as a platform for your game and is there any other platform you look forward to get your game onto?

Steam is one of the biggest platforms for PC games and that’s why it was clear that we’d choose Steam for starting with Depraved. The new discovery system is just great and makes us visible to fans of all genres. But we also plan to be present on other platforms in the future.

7. How much time did it take to get this game developed and what can players expect in updates for this game?

I guess we started with Depraved about three or four years ago. When your team consists of only two people everything takes a little bit longer. At the moment we do our best to have daily updates to improve the game – this contains bug fixes, but we also implement ideas from our community. And we’re already working on new features, like having native americans in the game.

8. What are your future plans as a game developer?

Our main goal is to survive. The game market is tough and developing a game takes time in which you don’t earn money, so you can’t afford a letdown. We want to continue developing games that we love, hoping that the community loves them too. I guess this works best by listening to the community and their wishes and needs. We already have an idea for a new project, but first we need to put all our energy in Depraved to improve it.

9. How long have you been developing games and what is the most enjoyable aspect of game development according to you?

We have been developing games for about ten years now (more or less successful). It started as a hobby, but soon it became much bigger. We’re dedicated to it and spend all our time in front of the computer, creating new stuff and discussing about our ideas.

The most enjoyable aspect of game development is to see that – after years of developing – the game finally works like it was supposed to do and that the people like it.

10. Have you developed the game solo or you have a team working with you?

It’s only the two of us.
